Transit navigation

What it does

Transit navigation guides you through a journey that uses public transport. It first helps you walk to the stop. Once you board a bus, it announces stops and the next stop's name along the way, and reminds you when to get off. It then guides you through transfers or the walk to your destination.

When to use it

Transit navigation combines walking and public transport in a route with spoken, step-by-step guidance. Use it for longer journeys to follow each stage through to your destination.

How to use it

Choose a route: After starting navigation, switch to “Bus and metro” on the route planning page to see different options. Preferences include Recommended, Metro first, Less walking, Fewer transfers, or Shorter time. Each option shows the total time, services and their order, number of transfers and stops, fare, and walking distance. A reminder appears when a service's last departure is approaching. Walking time includes the walk from your current location to the stop and from your final stop to the destination. Select “Route details” to hear the full itinerary.

For travel between cities, first enter both the city and place name in Search places to plan a journey across cities.

Walk to the stop: At the start, walking navigation guides you to the bus boarding point or metro entrance in your route. On arrival, a spoken prompt tells you which service to take, and the app switches to its bus or metro ride page.

Ride a bus: The bus ride page shows the route, direction, number of stops, and where to get off. During the ride, it updates the next stop and how many stops remain. If more than one bus route from the same stop can take you to your destination, switch to the one you actually boarded. As your stop approaches, you receive reminders in stages: that the stop is ahead, that you are approaching it, and that you have arrived and should get off.

Ride the metro: The metro ride page shows the line, direction, number of stops, and where to get off. Satellite positioning is unavailable underground, so metro rides currently have no station arrival alerts. For a metro transfer, the app also tells you how far to walk inside the station and which line to take. At the end of the ride, it tells you which exit to use and continues with walking directions to the next destination.

Walk to your destination: After the bus or metro ride, walking navigation starts automatically to guide you to your final destination.
