Along-route announcements

What it does

This feature automatically tells you the names of places you pass while walking and whether they are on your left or right. For example, you might hear “FamilyMart, left,” as if someone were describing the street beside you.

When to use it

Use it to find out which shops are nearby or use landmarks to check your location while walking. It works whether or not navigation is running.

How to use it

Turn on Along-route announcements from the Navigate home page, during navigation, or in Navigation settings.

Announcements use the format “Place name, left” or “Place name, right.” If the place is directly ahead, the announcement says that the place is nearby. Turn off “Announce direction” in the settings if you do not want to hear left and right.

You do not need to start navigation to use this feature. It pauses automatically while you ride a bus or metro and resumes when you get off.

You can adjust two settings:

Announcement distance: Choose whether to announce places within 20 or 50 meters. A range of 20 meters is recommended in residential areas or near shopping centers.
Place categories: Choose the types of places you want to hear, such as food, shopping, healthcare, or transport facilities. All categories are enabled by default.

A place is not repeated immediately after it has been announced. It can be announced again after you move away and return. During walking navigation, instructions such as turn alerts take priority. These announcements do not interrupt important navigation prompts.
